A 26-year-old man is in critical condition after a Milwaukee police detective shot him Saturday night while responding to a bar disturbance, police said.

It’s the fourth time in less than two weeks that a police officer has shot a person.

Police said the detective intervened among disorderly patrons who were leaving Larry’s Fiesta, 5219 W. Hampton Ave., about 11:55 p.m.

“During the encounter that ensued, the detective became fearful for her safety and discharged her firearm, striking one of the suspects,” police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said in a news release.

The detective was not injured.

The man is being treated at a hospital.

Schwartz said the suspect has a criminal arrest history that involves battery.

The detective, 31, is assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau. She has 13 years of service with the Milwaukee Police Department.
Under review

The incident is under investigation by the Police Department and the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office.

The detective was placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.

The district attorney will make the final determination in the incident.
